What a day. It seems like it would never end. First off a generator wasn't working. It was no big deal got it working and got water pumping for the cows. Then came the excitement for the day.
n
nThe plan was to put the bulls out with the yearlings today. So I drove up to the pasture they were in and was scouting out where they were at so I could just trailer the bulls up to them. It would be a lot easier. The pasture they are in is fairly rugged and I wasn't thinking that we've had more moisture than usual and I took a road across a side hill on a north slope and about halfway across the pickup lost traction in the mu8d which I am not used to being there and threatened to slide down the hill. The hill was steep enough that if is started sliding I probably would have rolled it to the bottom. I stopped, got out of the pickup and looked the situation over and decided the safest course of action was to get away from the pickup and leave it alone. Luckily I had a radio and called the hired man to come give me a hand.
n
nI first thought we could pull it out with the other pickup when it got there but the more I studied the situation the more unsure I became. I wasn't real sure by the time the other pickup got there but I had some trees cut out of the way and I decided to try to pull it out. We hooked two logging chains between the pickups and took the slack up in the chain so it was holding the pickup up a little and I got in the stuck pickup, rolled all the windows down, buckled my seat belt real tight and told the hired man to give it hell. I had told him before we started that once we got moving give it hell because there was no stopping once we started or i was going over the side. I personally had it figured that there was about a 25% chance of rolling it this way but short of hiring a bulldozer I didn't know how to get it out.
n
nWell, needless to say the hired man gave it hell and I gave it hell and while I looked at the world sideways a couple of times we managed to get it pulled out to a flat spot in one piece. After I cleaned the brown stain out of my drawers we were off to get the bulls.
n Continue reading "Taking the Boys Out"
