There was two stories today in the Gazette that are related in a very bizzare way and made me giggle.
n
nCowboy cuts costs by using work dogs
n
nNow I will admit a good stock dog makes working cattle a whole lot easier and it would be nice to have one. The thing is there are very few good stock dogs out there. In fact most stock dogs I see are in the "damn you" category. You know, damn you dog get out of the gate, damn you dog your chasing them the wrong way, you get the idea. Most guys have dogs that are midly useful if you can overlook the dogs bad traits which are quite a few but most dogs instead of cutting costs, like the article says, increase the amount of work to be done which cost more money.
n<!–more–>
nRancher offers guests chance to experience cattle drive
n
nThis article falls along the exact same lines to me. Nothing costs more in time, aggravation, and sanity than people helping you move cattle that have no concept what they are doing. Don't get me wrong, with only 100 cows a trained monkey, a sorry stock dog and a good cowboy is all you need to handle them. Everybody else is just along for the ride. I would be so worried that some dude would hurt themselves I would be sick by the end of the ride.
n
nThen I have a question, 3 days and only 25 miles, what took them so long? I have never personally drove cattle a long ways but I had a neighbor that moved 200 head 30 miles in 1 1/2 days, with only 3 people, and my dad talks about driving 300-400 head of cattle to the railroad about 30 miles away in 1 1/2 days with only 3-4 people. The people in the article must really take thier time.
n
nBoth the articles just caught my eye as examples of things that some people do that work for them that I don't see would work for me. Dogs or people that don't understand cattle are more of a hindrance that a help in my opinion and the further they can stay away the better.
n
nExample is not the main thing in influencing others.
