Curious

When I was in town yesterday I saw that gas prices were down to $2.15. This is almost 2 dollars a gallon below the summer high that the prices got to.
n
nThis lead to a thought running around in my head (I know, rare occurrence). People were whining, screaming, yelling and blaming the big oil companies for the high gas prices. Since everybody said the big oil companies were to blame for the high gas prices, aren't they also to blame for the low prices now? Shouldn't people be thanking Big oil for lower prices now (I won't sit here and argue if they should be lower or not)? Why aren't we seeing these thanks from people to big oil?
n
nOne last question, why would big oil lower gas prices since this will mean smaller profits for them? My little pea brain can't figure this one out. Everybody tells me big oil controls the prices, why are they doing this to themselves? Could it be supply and demand working? Nah, can't be. Everybody knows big oil controls prices for gas. This situation is well above my pay grade, I can't figure it out.
