Rain

Somebody really needs to check the calendar around here, it rained of all damn things yesterday. Rain. I can see snow on the first of March but rain? That just isn't right. The ground is still frozen hard and there are still snow banks all over the place. Rain just isn't right.
n
nIt has started melting enough around here getting over to the far hay stack, about 4 mile from where the cows are at, which has really good alfalfa hay in it is quite a chore. So I started feeding everything hay from my stack right where the critters are all wintering. I save the close stacks purposely every year so I don't have to mud up all the roads going to my far stacks. The close hay there is what I call my "wild hay." It is a grassy type of hay that is about 25% alfalfa and the rest grass. It grows on the flats that are not farmed alll on it's own. It's really great hay if you ask me.
n
nThe critters don't seem to like it as well though, they want the dairy quality alfalfa back. The first day I fed it they all wandered from flake to flake looking for a better chunk to eat. They finally decided to settle down to eat it but my horse Paint took the cake. He went from one flake to the other and checked out about 5 pieces then he very carefully spread him self out and peed on the hay. He let me know his opinion of the hay. Like it or not, that is all he is getting. I really had to laugh at Paint though, it was so funny.
n
nCalving on the heifers is going good and the cows should be starting any day now. They are heavy and in good shape, ready to go. Hope the weather stays nice for them. That would be a nice change of pace.
n
nWe have first raised a dust and then complain we cannot see. George Berkeley
