We finally finished the last of our cow work. I had a bunch of late calvers that needed branding and we got them done yesterday. With the late calvers, bums, and old cows we managed to scrape together almost 50 head to do. With my girls and the new hired hand we whipped right through them.
n
nWe have a semi load of drys yet to sell but that is going to have to wait until it is a little drier to happen. I'm not to sure that a semi could get in here next week so it is more likely going to be the week after. I wish I could out guess the market. It was down last week but who knows about next week or the week after. Ahh hell, I'll just ship them when I can and not worry about the market. It is what it is and you have to take it and go on. I have seen too many guys trying to out guess the market and really get themselves in a jam.
n
nNow to finish getting the haying equipment ready and try to hay. The alfalfa is ready to be cut but the fields are so wet it will be well over a week before I can get in to them. With all the moisture I might get some second cutting if I can just get the first cutting off. I know I will get the first cutting off, but when, I don't know.
n
nI can't believe how wet the ground is. You just ride a horse along and all of a sudden you will be sinking in mud in places that are never muddy. It will dry eventually but will take awhile. I'm kind of lucky in this country. Some places that have more gumbo type soils can get this wet and then be back in a drought within a couple of weeks because the soils don't store the moisture. Our deep sandy/loam soil around here really grabs onto the moisture and holds on to it. All the moisture in the ground should last us a good long time. I hope so, you never know when the rains will end. Hell they could be gone for the year now and what's in the ground will have to do. I hope not, but who knows.
n
nIf it is, I will manage, if it isn't great. Just keep chugging away I say. Take things as they come and smile. It makes your enemies wonder what you are smiling about.
n
nIt is better for you to be free of fear lying upon a pallet, than to have a golden couch and a rich table and be full of trouble.
