I have been meditating all day on Ed's article about where Eastern (note the capital) Montana lies. The Gazette has a map (I hate web pages that are PDF) that shows where different people think Eastern Montana divides from the rest of the state.
n
nI don't know that you can just draw a line on the map and define Eastern Montana. Eastern Montana is more a state of mind. A philosophy of bucking the odds and making it work despite the loneliness and open expanses the endless horizons throw at you. It's a state of mind that keeps you there trying and trying even while it seems like everyone else is giving it up. These attitudes don't only prevail in Eastern Montana but everywhere people toil to make a life for themselves where the majority of people say it's too hard.
n
nEastern Montana is not a place definable on maps, it's in the hearts and minds of those who love the greatest land in the world, and enjoy the challenges of living there.
n
nPeople seek a challenge just as fire seeks to flame. Chinese proverb
