Let's see, what's been happening around the ranch. Since the calves were weaned we have been busy with quite a few odds and ends. To start with some of the hay finally has started to arrive. There must be around 100 tons in, of the 800 I bought, and more coming in almost daily. In the back of my mind I have been worrying whether I was going to see this or not so I am very happy to see it.
n
nThe weaned calves are out contentedly grazing and I have found a buyer for the remaing 80 head I have to sell and they will go on the 18th. Both the cows and calves weaned easier than I have ever seen them wean. I'm not sure what that is about but I won't complain.<!–more–>
n
nI did try an experiment. I seeded about 100 acres down to grass seed. Normally this type of work is done in the spring but I decided to try it in the fall since we never seem to get enough spring moisture to makle it work. This way at the worst it will get snow melt moisture to get it going and maybe make a grass stand. We will see. It isn't all the grass I want to seed and the rest I will try in the more conventional spring manner of planting.
n
nWorked the yearlings on Friday and have them on different pasture. They are so fat it is unbelivable. that short grass this year is sure powerful. I am going to work the bulls this morning so all I will have left eventually is the remaining replacment heifer calves. It is really kind of nice to be catching up on the fall work. Gives a person a sense of accomplishment.
n
nBeing busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing. Thomas A. Edison
