As much as I would like to see Reservation Indians making money. it would be nice if they had a slow year but I can all ready tell you that isn't in the cards. Wildland firefighting buisnesses are really cashing in on these dry years. I had some experience with these independent contractor type of firefighting engine during our massive fire last year. The quality of the people running these outfits is very variable, but for the most part they did the job very well. If only the managers of the fire were half as good as the contractors the fire might not have gotten so big. At least they touch on an important issue in Indian Country when it comes to Indian Firefighters. They have been known to start fires themselves just so they can make money. It has not been so noticable during these real dry years since there has been enough work but it wasn't too many years ago it was a big problem. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying they all do it, but it is like anything, the actions of a few bad people tar the whole profession with a bad brush. I respect them greatly for their firefighting skills, but to start fires purposely is reprehensible.
n
n professional is someone who can do his best work when he doesn't feel like it.
